President's Message

Welcome to the Surfers Sunrise Post,

Great to hear from Evan Mita and Aaron Jackson about the work Mission Australia does and also getting some background from Evan about himself on his “The Man Behind The Badge” talk.  Good to see Andre Booyzen from the PCYC, a guest of Franz Huber, coming along. Don’t forget to bring a visitor along so they can see what Rotary does.

This Wednesday is a social meeting, everyone (including non-members) is welcome.  Please note that in those weeks when we have a social meeting, there will still be a get-together at the Benowa Tavern for a drink on Thursday afternoons. This was instigated by Mitch Brown and I intend to keep it going. The time is from 4.15 pm onwards and once again, everyone is welcome.

There will be a get-together of the Golf Committee to outline some details for the big day in October.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

There has been a donation of $5000 to the Wheelchair Trust from a business called Beech Capital.  Thank you very much to the managing director Peter Flanders and to Paul Douglas who is also associated with Beech Capital.  This business makes several donations throughout the year to various charities and the Wheelchairs was one that they selected this year.

The deposit has been paid for the materials required for the supplies to build further wheelchairs.  The sample of the chair from WA is on its way and will be at the shed hopefully later this week.

Have a great week!! And the thought for the week is

"Your talent determines what you can do. Your motivation determines how much you are willing to do. Your attitude determines how well you do it."  Lou Holtz, former American Football Player, Coach and Analyst.

See you Wednesday.

Doug Lipp,
President 2023-24.
Stories
This coming Wednesday 12th July: Evan Mita
This coming Wednesday, Evan Mita (as well as Jake Richards if he can get back in time - he recently accepted a new position) will introduce themselves with the traditional 'Rotarian behind the Badge' presentation for new members. Evan will also bring his boss along, so come and make them all welcome!

Lyssia Demeulenaere returns after 10 years
What a lovely surprise this morning at Surfers Sunrise: visit by Lyssia Demeulenaere, our Youth Exchange Student from Belgium who arrived almost exactly 10 years ago in July 2013 (Picture left). And whilst we have all aged 10 years... NOT FAIR! Well, you be the judge! Must have had something to do with the air and her lifestyle: Upon returning to Belgium and completing her degree, she went off to Bolivia and all sorts of other places.
Welcome back to the Gold Coast, Lyssia! Great to see you!
Snippets of last week’s meeting 050723

Adrian Crowe was Chairman. We had apologies from Darrell Brown, Charles Thomasson, Ray Higgs, and Evan Mita.

Our new President Doug Lipp welcomed all members and visitors Matt Hayward and Lyssia Demeulenaere, our Youth Exchange Student from 10 years ago (see separate article above).
Prior to outlining his program for the upcoming year, Doug commended Immediate Past President Mitch Brown for a very successful year. He emphasised a “steady as she goes” approach for 2023-24, with the wheelchairs program continuing, the X-Ray Unit for Vanuatu being completed within four weeks, we will continue to support our Youth programs, including the Lutzy Award (being presented on 9th August). “Let’s have fun, whilst helping others!” he said.
Doug will support District Governor Dave Harmon’s major emphasis on Domestic Violence, including getting an agreement with the Surfers Paradise SLSC to wear the purple ‘Rotary Says No To Domestic Violence’, which Dave has successfully implemented in clubs and restaurants in Ballina.

Here are some of the “big ticket” items:
  • We are planning to have a fundraising luncheon along the lines of the Italian Long Lunch
  • As always, emphasis on quality membership, including getting an additional Corporate Member
  • Getting good District Conference and District Training Seminar attendance
  • Maintain our annual giving to The Rotary Foundation of $100.00 per member, and continue to support the Polio Plus program
Mario Fairlie provided an update on the X-Ray Unit for Vanuatu project: All our equipment is now on site, and the X-Ray and pathology equipment is expected to arrive shortly. Our crew will leave next Wednesday, flying via Port Vila to the island of Santo, then by boat to the location. They will be billeted on site, eating local food. The job is expected to take two weeks. Matt Hayward will be there to install the PC he has prepared and to install the X-Ray equipment, with (hopefully) an engineer joining him.
The next step then will be the training of the locals in the operation and maintenance of the equipment, which will be organised by Dr Graham Sivyer and the Gold Coast Medical Association. Watch this space for updates.

Peter Morgan advised that, in his capacity as a trustee of the Wheelchair Trust, he had been contacted by Rotary International. They want to organise a photographer to come to the project shed. Expect a reportage about our projects to appear soon on Rotary International’s various print and electronic media!
Monash Uni is looking for participants to study Knee Surgery
We have had an enquiry from Monash University - they are looking for potential subjects who are currently suffering from knee pain. Seeing that some of our members are (a) in the age group where this might not be uncommon and (b) have played rough sports in their misspent youth, I thought I'd bring it to your attention. The research is conducted entirely via phone and on-line communication.

Find the flyer in the Download Section on the right - please contact the organiser of the study, Dr Jonathan Foo, directly - details are on the flyer.

Duty Roster - note: subject to change - please check every week.  Note: Fellowship duty also is expected to be at the Project Shed on the Saturday following the meeting

Note: Wednesday 12th July is a formal, NOT social meeting to bring the calendar into alignment.

Darrell Brown sends his apologies from Thredbo.  Apparently, tit finally has started to snow...
Some call it multi tasking. I call it doing something else whilst I try to remember what I was doing in the first place.
