I received some great news over the weekend from PP Mario Fairlie – our application for a Global Grant for the Vanuatu Health Centre Project has been accepted by Rotary International. It is a great achievement for many reasons including the co-operation between the three sponsor clubs (Surfers Sunrise, Broadbeach and Gold Coast), the fantastic contribution by the Rotaractors as well as the help and guidance we have received from District 9640. Thank you and well done to all that have contributed so far. There is plenty more to do including raising more funds over the coming year and of course the transport and assembly of the Health Centre on Pentecost Island. All members of Surfers Sunrise and the Shed should be proud to be associated with such a worthwhile project.
We have also received a letter from Wesley Mission Queensland thanking the Rotary Club of Surfers Sunrise and the Shed Volunteers for the warm welcome their members have received attending and helping at the Shed over the last few months. Currently, we have four Wesley Mission members assisting with the production of wheelchairs and this number is likely to grow – we look forward to continuing and growing this relationship at the Shed.
Please mark in your diaries Sunday 4th July for the Surfers Sunrise Winter Lunch and Changeover. This social lunch will be at Links Hope Island Golf Club. It’s a great venue and we look forward to seeing you all there for an afternoon of socializing. Further details to follow.

Rob was born in Liverpool and like a genuine Liverpudlian, he of course enjoys the Beatles and follows… oh no! Not Liverpool Football Club but that city’s other Premier League club, Everton, aka ‘The Blues’. [I don’t follow Soccer, so I had to look it up: the last time they were English Football Champions was in 1986-87. Appears to be a character-building exercise, just like following the Blues in AFL… ☺ Ed.] Born into a large family of 3 boys and 4 girls, Rob is the only one to emigrate, and he made the decision relatively late, at age 31. That was some 40 years ago, and he came directly to the Gold Coast (Yes, the man has discerning taste!).
Five years upon arrival he met the love of his life, Sharon, and founded the Australian branch of the Wilson family. They are justifiably proud of their four children and four grandchildren.
Rob is a self-taught professional photographer and video artist. Whilst he did, of course, the usual weddings and portrait work, Rob was engaged in a lot of other professional, commercial work. For the last 10 years before retiring, he also drove a bus full time.
In his spare time, Rob plays the guitar and sings (yes, Beatles songs, but also Cat Stevens, just to name two. We are working on him to bring his guitar to the shed soon!)

This year, to maximize the social aspect, the format will be slightly changed: All formalities will be commenced immediately upon everyone being seated. It is planned to fit into a, say, 35 minutes time frame, after which we'll have a 3-course Luncheon (Vegetarian and Vegan options available), enjoying fellowship. Note: we deliberately title it 'Winter Luncheon'; we really would like our partners, family and friends to come along, making it a real social event!
