President's Message

Welcome to the Surfers Sunrise Post,

A very successful day last Wednesday at the Lutzy Award.  Mia Watson, the young lady selected as the winner of the award, is a credit to her family and to the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club. Thanks to all who attended, especially Jan Lutz and to the surf club members.  Special thanks to Ray Higgs and Graeme Isaacson for their organisation and liaison with the SLSC.

It looks like the Bunnings sausage sizzle was another successful day.  I was unable to assist as there was a district meeting that I had to attend.  Thanks to all who helped (they are all listed in a separate article below).  Don’t forget we need additional members to assist with the collections at an Expo on Tuesday 22nd August.  Please contact Darrell Brown if you can help.

There was a VOM sent to the board members to decide on a donation to the Windeward Bound tall ship program (see bulletin published on 31/07/23). This VOM was passed and the intention of this donation was to help Matt Hayward join the crew for their upcoming voyage.

Don’t forget a social meeting this Wednesday at the Surf Club and refreshments at the Benowa Tavern on Thursday starting around 4.30 pm.

Quote for the week: "If you really look closely, most overnight successes took a long time."  Steve Jobs

See you Wednesday.

Doug Lipp,
President 2023-24.

Mia Watson is the Lutzy Award winner for 2023!
Congratulations! Mia Watson is the Lutzy Award winner for 2023!
At yesterday's Surfers Sunrise breakfast meeting, we presented the 'Lutzy Award' to Mia., in the form of a specially inscribed surf ski. The award is in honour of our former member Keith Lutz, who was a true leader in both our club as well as in the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club. A committee of the SLSC nominates the winner, selected not necessarily because of his/her surfing skills (but that is certainly no detriment!)
, but for their leadership qualities. This was the 8th year the award was presented. And just in case you are interested: of the eight winners, six were female!

Very successful Bunnings Sausage Sizzle on Sunday
Last Sunday, three teams rolled up to crew the Bunnings Sausage Sizzle stand. Figures aren't yet in, but considering the perfect weather, it is bound to be very much worthwhile! A big thank you to all the team members:  Organiser Ross Augustine. Equipment Transport: Bryan Tuesley.
Morning Team: Mitch Brown, Evan Mita, Angus Miller, Rick Parry.
Midday Team: Adrian Crowe, Chris Thurtell, Paul Seymour, Al Sirovs.
Afternoon team: Nick Cole, Darrell Brown, Charles Thomasson, Neil Thurlow.
A special thank you to Ann O'Connor, who was there just about all day!
National Youth Science Forum 2024: Applications are open
Over the years, Surfers Sunrise has supported a fair number of successful applicants to the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). Who could forget Sophie Seumahu (photo left, when she reported on her experiences in March 2022), or Briana Dorrough (photo right, 2021)?

Well, applications for the NYSF 2024 are now open. So, do you know a genuine Science student who might qualify? Note, despite the rather stiff price tag of $2,450, plus $65 application fee, competition for the places available is quite severe. However, in the past, our club has partly subsidised this. More information on their website: https://www.nysf.edu.au/

Now, the bigger problem is to figure out who is going to do it.
