President's Message

Doug Lipp

Welcome to the Surfers Sunrise Post,

Great to hear from Evan Mita and Aaron Jackson about the work Mission Australia does and also getting some background from Evan about himself on his “The Man Behind The Badge” talk.  Good to see Andre Booyzen from the PCYC, a guest of Franz Huber, coming along. Don’t forget to bring a visitor along so they can see what Rotary does.

This Wednesday is a social meeting, everyone (including non-members) is welcome.  Please note that in those weeks when we have a social meeting, there will still be a get-together at the Benowa Tavern for a drink on Thursday afternoons. This was instigated by Mitch Brown and I intend to keep it going. The time is from 4.15 pm onwards and once again, everyone is welcome.

There will be a get-together of the Golf Committee to outline some details for the big day in October.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

There has been a donation of $5000 to the Wheelchair Trust from a business called Beech Capital.  Thank you very much to the managing director Peter Flanders and to Paul Douglas who is also associated with Beech Capital.  This business makes several donations throughout the year to various charities and the Wheelchairs was one that they selected this year.

The deposit has been paid for the materials required for the supplies to build further wheelchairs.  The sample of the chair from WA is on its way and will be at the shed hopefully later this week.

Have a great week!! And the thought for the week is

"Your talent determines what you can do. Your motivation determines how much you are willing to do. Your attitude determines how well you do it."  Lou Holtz, former American Football Player, Coach and Analyst.

See you Wednesday.

Doug Lipp,
President 2023-24.

This Wednesday 19th July: Social Meeting at the Surf Club
We are back to the "normal" cycle: every second Wednesday, we have a social meeting at the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club. Starting at 07:00 am, come along for a cuppa, perhaps some breakfast, and help to solve all the world's problems (and some of our own). And often, there is as much serious club business discussed as on a "formal" meeting. You can also brag about your achievements and lament your failures, aches and pains (we mightn't listen though... ☺).

Last meeting's Guest Speakers: Aaron Jackson & Evan Mita
At this week's meeting, our newest member Evan Mita (ok, not so new: Evan re-joined our club after a few years' interruption due to business commitments) brought his manager Aaron Jackson along to tell us all about his workplace, Mission Australia. The organisation, with over 2000 staff across the nation, was established over 160 years ago in 1859. Represented in all states. Mission Australia provides a wide range of services for disadvantaged people, ranging from domestic violence, homelessness, aged care, alcohol & drug addiction, to employment services. It is the latter segment where Evan and Aaron work, specialising in finding employment for young people aged 15 - 24 old "who are disengaged".

Their clients are referred to them principally via Centrelink, but also from other government agencies. Their program, which has a maximum duration of 18 months for individuals, goes way beyond simply finding of a job for the moment. In addition to vocational skills, it involves the learning of life skills, with the aim to remain employed for the long term and to function well in the community. As Evan called it, the "introduction to soft skills".

Evan is also coordinating with our Wheelchair Trust, in view of some of his clients volunteering at our project shed.

Snippets of last week’s meeting 050723

Mario Fairlie was Chairman. We had apologies from Gerald East, Paul Seymour, Ray Higgs, Charles Thomasson, Al Sirovs and Mitch Brown (the latter two on the way to Vanuatu with 5 more, see photo right, by Al Sirovs).
President Doug Lipp welcomed all members and guests Aaron Jackson (guest and fellow guest speaker with Evan Mita – see separate article above) and Andre Booyzen (guest of Franz Huber).  Doug reminded members of the upcoming Bunnings Sausage Sizzle on 9th August (and others) and foreshadowed a visit on 26th July by the organiser of ‘Windeward Bound’, a tall sailing ship which comes into Southport early next month, and on 4th October we’ll be honoured by the visit of District Governor Dave Harmon and his charming wife Robyn (see Events list on left)

Mario Fairlie briefly outlined the mission of the team that had just left for Vanuatu to re-erect the X-Ray Unit on Pentecost Island.  This was followed by the presentation of our guest speakers Evan Mita and Aaron Jackson on the organisation they are both working with, Mission Australia.

Graeme Isaacson announced that he had concluded a special deal with the Surf Club to cater at the presentation of the Lutzy Award in a fortnight – see above, including Trybooking link.
Darrell Brown announced that he and Kerrie had become grandparents again! Congratulations! (And, as is tradition, Darrell made a donation of $100 to the Wheelchair Trust).

Inspirations - well, sort of... 190723
Here is the test of whether your mission on this earth is finished:  If you are alive, it isn’t.

I got myself a Senior’s GPS. Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination, but it also tells me what I intended to do when I get there.
