 It is always a pleasure to listen to a GSE member's recollections of their trip, and so it was with Andrew's. He is a young Archtect at Burling Brown, the company our DGE Darrell Brown founded and our President Elect Simon Brook is a freshly baked director of.
GSE, short for Group Study Exchange, is a long established program designed to provide young professionals with an insight into "how things are done over there" - as the name would suggest, an exchange of ideas, views, and just as important, the establishment of professional connections. As Andrew expressed, even today where the realities of Facebook, LinkedIn, Skype and Facetime allow instant personal contact with photos, videos and access to any data one wants to share, the physical personal contact is still irreplacable.
Andrew's team, consisting of two ladies and two gentlemen, plus of course the leader, moved to Denmark in District 1461 in May/June 2015. Being an Architect by profession, Andrew's main interest of   course would have been the design of buildings. He ran us through a slide show of some of the most memorable structures. Some, such as 'Isbjerget' (Icebergs) in Aarhus of exceptional design yet - as he pointed out - were, at least by Australian Standards, not as habitable as they could be since they are all steel, glass and concrete without any greenery of any description.
But this was well made up by seeing buildings such as 'The Wave', or 'Reflection', the only modern building in the ancient city of Aarhus, so named because in its outer panels, it reflects the images of the historical constructions of the old town.

"All the Architects" (Darrell Brown, Simon Brook and Guest Speaker Andrew Brewer), Andy thundered to start off: Last week marked the Anniversary of the first Public Phone Box to see the light of day. (See footnote) So what? Well, it required one of London's foremost Architects to design it! Andy then went on to recount an episode when, as a young Police Officer, they staked a suspect to a Public Phone Box. Andy, obviously not intimate with its design, decided to ram the door. He didn't realize that the door in phone boxes opens inwards and as a result nearly crushed the hapless caller inside to death. And no, the guy was not the criminal they were looking for...
Mario Fairly, you are looking a bit faded out? ("Too much work!" was Mario's response)... Bulletin Editor Franz Huber invited Tania Laird to his house to sample the taste of an original Swiss Sausage... [never let the truth get in the way of a good story... Franz invited Tania to come to the annual Swiss Club's End of Yea r do at Evandale, where she would have the opportunity to partake in an original recipe Swiss Bratwurst!]
The Pope (Des La Rance) is back! The world lights up and we gaze in wonder...
Then, there was a certain game of sports held where Australia played against New Zealand. Anyone taking glee on this misfortune: it was one of the worst umpiring decisions ever. If you were dismayed at this, you're ok. All others, cop a fine!
First Public Phone Box: Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, a London Architect famous for his work on the Liverpool Cathedral, Battersea Power Station etc, is credited with the design of the famous red phone box. Today, there are far more of these red phone boxes in tourist locations than there were originally in London.

Doug Lipp (for Tania Laird) was at the door, Neil Thurlow (for Graeme Isaacson) was Chairman and Andy Bell (for himself) was Sergeant.
We had apologies from Tania Laird, Graeme Isaacson, Terry O'Shea and Jason Price.
The meeting started off by conducting the Annual General Meeting in near record time (see separate article about this).
President Paul Seymour greeted all members and visitors David Baguley (incoming District Governor Elect Nominee for 2018/19), Jo Gorman (guest of Andy Bell), Mark Twyford former President of RC of Parkwood, guest of Franz Huber) and our Guest Speaker, John Duthie, director of the ETC company.
Ray Higgs brought us up to date on the 'Lutzie' Award in honour of our late member Keith Lutz: Ray and Chris Thurtell had a meeting with Surfers Paradise Life Saving Club. The award, which will be open to 14 - 18 year olds, will be a special Surfboard, valued at some $1,700. It is also planned to provide an appropriate Award Certificate.
Youth Service Director Chris Thurtell reported on the previous weekend's Youth Exchange Camp: all Incoming, Outgoing and Rebound students met. Our Isabelle Franich (France 2014) was also in attendance. Chris also reported that Martina Missarelli's family will be over here in early January 2016 - see separate article about "inofficial" breakfast on 6th January at Domani's on Tedder Avenue, Main Beach.
Wheelchair Trust Chairman Daryl Sanderson had a meeting with an Employment Company about the School for Samoa project of Helensvale High School. It stands to reason that a grant of approx $10,000 will buy the materials (timber etc). Grafton Rotary Club will be saving old bikes for us, but the question is how to transport them? Beaudesert Special School also has bikes, however, in this instance, our old collaborators, the Palen Creek Correctional Centre, will pick them up as they bring their finished wheelchairs back... And Apple Marketing has already contributed some $5,000 from phone calls on their Christmas Appeal for wheelchairs. Well done, Apple Marketing!
Christmas presents for Anglicare: Ian Mayberry urges all members to provide a present, as we have traditionally done for decades, for Anglicare. Note, for 0 - 14 year olds, new and unwrapped.
DGN Darrell Brown reported on a recent review he conducted in his capacity as District Governor Nominee. Of interest: some 30 years ago, approx 40 people were involved. Now there are just 7, and only 14 clubs are prepared to host. Darrell acknowledged that our club's Youth Service Director, Chris Thurtell, will be incoming Youth Exchange Chairman at District level commencing 2016/17. Congratulations, Chris!
President Elect Simon Brook is looking for people who would like to host the inbound GSE Team from Pensylvannia: 11th to 15th May 2016. Contact Simon directly.
Secretary Peter Morgan is trying to find the Blood Pressure machine we "used to have". [Rumors that this has anything to do with the stress of being the chief legal officer of Suncorp are totally fabricated...] However, it would appear that it didn't work properly anyway, so we might as well write it off and perhaps get another one, if we really need one?

 This Wednesday, Youth Director Chris Thurtell will outline details of the discussions he and Ray Higgs had with David Orchard of the Southport/Main Beach SLSC in relation to the Keith Lutz Award, in memory of our Charter Member, Wheelchair driving force and Surf Life Saver extraordinaire.
Details will be published in next week's bulletin.
