As a final get together for the year, this weeks Christmas breakfast is at QT's... and it's our last chance to donate toys for those who need them more! Can you believe that throughout the year the simple coffee catch up after our breakfast meetings has raised over $400.... all of which is used to purchase toys for the Anglican Church's St John's Drop-in Centre. So to those who have stopped by for a coffee through out the year, thank you for your contribution... every cup helps!

To everyone in the team, the families and friends of Surfers Sunrise, thank you for your hard work this year and your commitment to making this club the greatest. We've kicked some goals, kicked some arse and most of all, had a kick arse time. I hope you all enjoy the festive season with family, friends and loved ones. Make sure you get some down time, to reflect, relax and reset because we got a huge 2017 ahead of us!

There are distinct privileges when one is Bulletin Editor of Surfers Sunrise: one gets invited to luncheons, rubbing shoulders with personalities such as the President of the Gold Coast Islamic Society, Mr Hussin Goss, and the Assistant Commissioner of Police for the South Eastern Region, Brian Codd APM... [OK, stop blowing, Franz, and get on with it... ☺]
Last Friday, our wheelchair team was invited to join the local Islamic Society for a luncheon at the Mosque off Olsen Avenue Labrador. The occasion was a consignment of some 181 Wheelchairs, bound for Syrian Refugees, organized through the local Muslim congregation. Wheelchair Trust Chairman Daryl Sanderson, on behalf of his team, accepted an Appreciation Award, beautifully engraved on burnished metal (see picture on right) from the President of the Gold Coast Islamic Society, Mr Hussin Goss. At the same time, Commissioner Brian Codd APM and two of his lieutenants were also present, as were a number of other dignitaries from the local Muslim community. Breaking News: Commissioner Brian Codd has confirmed that he'll speak at our club in the foreseeable future!
How do you get the man who is in charge of running the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2018 Commonwealth Games to speak at your Rotary Club? Easy. You wait till he comes over and asks you to lend him a hammer… ☺ Thus started the relationship between our DGE Darrell Brown and David Zolkwer, his neighbour across the road. But David has had exposure to Rotary before: Some 20 years ago, on one of his many major assignments in London, the Rotary Club of Maidenhead was a major contributor of volunteer labour at one of the events he organized. Today, David is Executive Vice President and Director of Public Events of Jack Morton, the multinational company that has organized events such as Opening Ceremonies at Olympic and Commonwealth Games for some 77 years. They have won close to 100 major awards. But they are also involved in lots and lots of corporate promotions – some 10,000 (yes. Ten Thousand) events over the last 12 months. Their client list reads like a Who’s Who of major brands: BP, Google, IBM, Nike and the list goes on.
Recently appointed to run the events at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (the fact that they also ran the Glasgow games and the London Olympics would not have been a disadvantage), David outlined an in principle timeline of staging. And it is not easy, in particular where one deals with lots of people who have all their own view of what it is important. “The list of what should and what shouldn’t be in the show is just about identical…” he quipped.[Hmmm… with ‘PowerPoint Pete’ in charge of the games, I’d love to be a fly on the wall… Ed.]
So where do you start? Well, with a principal concept of course. On Jack Morton's website, under ‘What we do’, they state “We create experiences that strengthen the relationships between brands and the people who matter most to them.” Sure. On the timeline David outlined, some 5 major segments are broken down into hundreds of steps. And always, one is on the lookout to separate ‘Shock and Awe –v- Substance’, over-hyped and over-inflated statements. “There is a difference between a good idea and the right idea”.
Des La Rance was at the door, Angus Miller was Chairman and, in view of both our regular and deputy Sergeant being absent, Larry Murray stepped in as Acting Sergeant.
We had apologies from Gerald East, Paul Seymour, Andy Bell, Ian Mayberry (and there may have been others - sometimes the Surfers Sunrise members are a bit boisterous... ☺)
President Simon Brook welcomed members and visitors (former Councillor) Margaret Grummit (RC of Parkwood), Kerry Dutton (guest of Tania Laird), Tania's Grandson Gordon Cammillieri[did she say 'Grandson'?? Yes, she did indeed. Ed.], former member Ken Gosney, honorary member Barry Lea and of course our guest speaker David Zolkwer. Simon congratulated our Wheelchairs Team on their recent TV exposure on Channel 11 (see last week's bulletin and website). He reminded us of the upcoming BIG WEEKEND of 23th October: We'll have a Sausage Sizzle commitment at Bunnings and on the same day, Gold Coast Rotary Club will conduct a Trial Run of their Gold Coast Ramble, of which we are also an integral component. Then there is the Polio Plus connection next month at the Runaway Bay Shopping Centre, and last, but not least, next week we'll have Chas Mostert, one of the top V8 Supercar drivers in Australia, as our Guest Speaker...
Wheelchair Trust Chairman 'Dazzling' Daryl Sanderson (predictably) reported on the Channel 11 exposure, followed by the announcement that, in conjunction with the Gold Coast Islamic Society, we'll send a container with 181 wheelchairs to Jordan, for Syrian refugees. In connection with that, we have been invited to a luncheon at the Gold Coast Mosque (see separate report). Daryl also brought up some interesting statistics: Last year, we sent just 98 wheelchairs (albeit, just before the end of the year, a full container was sent to Sri Lanka), but this year we have sent 521!
Doug Lipp reminded us of the upcoming Melbourne Cup luncheon at Seaworld: you can either sell Sweep Tickets or be a guest - see Doug or Tania Laird for more details.
Fundraising Director Tania Laird confirmed that we'll stage a Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings Southport on Sunday 23rd October, whilst Social Services chief Graeme Isaacson advised that he had booked a table of 10 for the October Fest on Friday 21st October. Mario Fairlie emphasised that we need additional funds to keep the Wheelchairs Project going.

Mitch Brown was overheard telling President Simon Brook that the picture displayed in last week's President Message looked quite similar to Sergeant Larry.
