President's Message

Mitch Brown
member photo
Liebe Mitglieder, eine/r und alle,
According to his post last week, President Mitch Brown is currently immersing himself in the seasonally balmy waters (!!) of timtumili minanya, aka Tasmania’s River Derwent. I take the liberty of filling the President’s Message space on his behalf.

Yesterday Sunday, Catherine and I had the pleasure of attending the District Changeover in Ballina. Regrettably, District Governor Karen Thomas was unable to attend, due to rather severe ill health. Vice Governor Jeff Egan took on her functions.

Many people might consider this type of event “preaching to the converted”. Well, call me “converted”. On these events, the good ol’ Rotary fellowship is always quite profound and enjoyable.

I won’t elaborate on any of the individual aspects – read about this soon enough in the July edition of the District Governor’s newsletter (edited by Jodie Shelley, who again has taken on the job.

However, there was a little bit extra for three Surfers Sunrise Rotarians: on behalf of (now Past) District Governor Karen, PDG Jeff called a number of people to the stage (see photo further on). All were exiting District related positions at the end of this term: PDG Darrell Brown, who finishes his term as Youth Services Executive Chair (he was absent) and Mark Twyford who for the past three years held the enormously demanding post of District Treasurer. Last, and definitely least, yours truly; I edited the DG’s newsletter for just the past year.

PDG Karen, I’m sure that Darrell and Mark join me in thanking you for the recognition, and on behalf of Surfers Sunrise Rotary, we wish you a swift and full recovery.

Franz Huber,
on behalf of President Mitch Brown.

Special recognition for Surfers Sunrise Rotarians
At last Sunday's District 9640 Changeover luncheon, together with several others, three Surfers Sunrise Rotarians who are "retiring" from their District job received special mention. The photo above (from left): includes (now past) District Secretary Janette Glynn, yours truly (District newsletter editor), (now past) District Treasurer and Company Board Director Mark Twyford, District Webmaster Denis Hallworth, (now) District Governor Elect Lisa Hunt, PDG Harry Bolton and (on stage) MC Michael Jones. Not in the photo: PDG Darrell Brown, who retired as District Youth Executive Chair.

Surfers Sunrise is still well represented on the District Executive, with incoming President Doug Lipp continuing as District Finance Chairman and Company Board Director.  Regrettably, DG Karen Thomas herself was unable to attend, due to ill health.
What should we name our chief rat catcher at the project shed?
No sensible submissions yet? Come on! What should we name our chief rat catcher at the project shed? I thought that we should have a NAMING COMPETITION. What should we call it? (No politics, please! 😊)

This photo, by long-time Associate Member Don Ferguson, shows our pet carpet python (Morelia Spilota) at our project shed. Not sure if it is the same that has been around for years, see Al Sirovs displaying 2-metre snake skin last year.

Again: Carpet pythons are placid and not dangerous, except when they have just shed their skin. Then they are a bottle green colour and are hurting all over, and can bite you just like a cranky dog might. So stay clear of them at that time.
