Greetings, fellow members, associate members and friends of Surfers Sunrise Rotary,
Whilst a large contingent of members is still on holiday, last week's meeting we had an open discussion and ideas session on the way forward for our club over the next few years. One area raised and discussed was membership. Franz Huber raised the important issue of attracting new members, whilst acknowledging that a substantial proportion of our current membership is over 70 and 80 years. I would like all members to contribute to ideas for attracting younger membership.
There was also very good feedback from our younger members, and many new ideas which will be followed up, along with the membership review and an action plan will be forwarded.
It was good to see this last Saturday the number of people now attending the Wheelchair shed, with numbers now exceeding 30.
A reminder that this Thursday we have a social meeting at Benowa Tavern from 5.00 pm and all members, associate members and friends are invited to attend.
This coming Wednesday 21st January will be a social meeting at the Surf Club. While, during the Surf Club's renovations, our 'formal' meetings are held at the TRYP Hotel in Southport, on alternate weeks we'll continue to meet socially at the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club. Come along for a cuppa and/or breakfast. The meeting will be in the upstairs venue, if the weather is nice, on the balcony. Lots of good banter and laughter, and - believe it - sometimes there are more club related matters discussed and solutions determined than on a formal meeting!
Our corporate member Kieser Bundall (Kane Chisholm) cordially invites you to join them this coming Friday, 23rd January, for a social night. It will be held at the Gold Coast Tavern, 150 Bundall Road, Bundall. There will be games, trivia, food, drinks... As of last Saturday night, according to Kane, a dozen people from our club have already registered.
Cost is just $20.00 per head, and all proceeds will be donated to our club. Partners and friends welcome too. You need to book – simply scan the QR Code on the brochure. Kieser will also run a separate fundraiser for our club: for every new consultation they perform up to 31st January 2026, they’ll donate $20.00 to our club, with a target of $3,000. Details are in the flyers you can download – see Download page on the right.
In many clubs, one hardly dares to advertise “Club Assembly” or similar. Not so in Surfers Sunrise Rotary! Even though approximately one third of our members are still on holiday, it was a lively meeting indeed! And our very special visitor from South Korea, Dong Myong Lee, together with his partner Choi Seon Hee [correct spelling not assured... Ed.] put some additional spice into the proceedings.
Major points: Our corporate member Kane Chisholm announced that his company, Kieser Bundall, will hold a Social Night on Friday 23rd January – grab the posters from the Download Files on the right and check the separate story below. Wheelchair Trust Chairman Geoff Croad outlined various details relating to our operations at the project shed, including new procedures implemented to record cash sales, and a new process for the purchase of miscellaneous items, such as consumables and tools from local suppliers. Franz Huber presented briefly on the age demographics of our club. Whilst the subject might be touchy if not controversial (about one third of our membership is >=80 years young), it certainly sparked a lively discussion! Franz suggested that all members should spend some serious time to look at the Rotary Action Plan. In relation to this, Past President (and current Youth Service Director) Mitch Brown reminded members that, in his year (2022-23), he developed a Strategic Plan, which is as relevant today as it was then. Members can download it from our website (requires login/password). Click on this link to view.
Duty Roster - note: subject to change - please check every week. Note: Fellowship duty also is expected to be at the Project Shed on the Saturday following the meeting
