Project Shed compliance issues as part of the lease renewal continue to be a major task for the Club. The Club needs to meet with Gold Coast City Council representatives to undertake a sustainability audit.
As a requirement of that process the Club needs to display evidence of:
a returned net surplus over the past four years;
a sinking fund to maintain the Shed moving forward;
an annual budget with a designated allocation for Shed maintenance;
a strategic plan approved by the Club outlining both short and long term objectives.
The need for strategic planning was raised as part of my address to the Club in mid-July and will need to come into sharp focus in the very near term.
The activities undertaken at the Project Shed, for want of a better way of putting it, have historically defined what Surfers Sunrise as a club is all about. For that mission to continue, the Club needs to secure the lease renewal.
Many members may view the requirements for the lease renewal, particularly given the length of time the Project Shed has been operating, as overly bureaucratic and burdensome. Be that as it may, it is what it is and the Club needs to comply.
Geoff and Paul are toiling hard behind the scenes in chipping away at the building defect issues. Charles, Doug and Mark are attending to the financial compliance and budgeting matters.

“I have the best job in the Police Force” was Sgt Cherie Maclean’s opening. Cherie would easily qualify as the friendliest, yet very professional, Police Officer I’ve ever met. OK, the heavy 9 mm pistol, a taser and whatever other paraphernalia a police officer is required to carry around telegraph that she is ready to tackle whatever Police job might pop up at short notice. But there are no two ways: Her enthusiasm and her positive and outgoing manner leave little doubt that she indeed takes her vocation of managing the Gold Coast Police Youth Citizens Club (PCYC) very seriously.
The organisation has existed for over 70 years, with some 57 clubs in our state of Queensland. What does it do? A program ‘Braking the Cycle’[no Henrietta, no spelling error – it’s braking as in slowing down, I did check! Ed. ☺]. They are looking for mentors. To do what? Mentoring young learner drivers, assisting them to reach the required 100 hours of driving to get their P-Plates. “Me?? Sitting in a car with a L-Plater??” I hear you ask. Yes, it is safe. Containers should be empty, unbroken, the lid removed and display a 10-cent refund marking on the label. Something like the image (right), but many others are simply marked as suitable for recycling. President Mitch Brown commenced the meeting with a ‘Welcome to Country’ [still struggling a bit with the local Yugambeh dialect of the local aboriginal language, though but I’m sure he’ll get it right… 😊 Ed.], and welcomed our Guest Speaker Sgt Cherie MacLean as well as Paul O’Neill’s guest, his grandson Ethan.
