Welcome to another Surfers Sunrise Post.

By now you should have received an email from Franz concerning a request from Rowan Johnstone, the District Membership Chair, for members to complete a membership survey.  If the survey is completed by 15th March 2024 and clubs stage a “Rotary Info Event” before the 30th April 2024, clubs can receive a matching contribution of up to $300 toward the cost of the event. Please do participate - this is your opportunity to voice your views. And it's anonymous.

Zoom meeting tonight (Monday, 04/03/24): I know it s short notice but tonight there is a zoom meeting booked to discuss to how the proposed Rotary Club Community Grouping is being rolled out The meeting is a 6:00  pm to 7:30 pm QLD time. Click on this link to participate.

Don’t forget that the Rotary Friendship Exchange team from Pennsylvania are arriving shortly. If you can please help with driving and wish to participate functions (see Events List for details), that would be great. Contact Paul Seymour directly if required.

No thought for the week but a quote I heard whilst watching a show on TV: Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life.  [It’s attributed to both Mark Twain as well as to Confucius. Ed, aka‘Smart A….’ ☺]

Doug Lipp,
President 2023-24.

Stories
This coming Wednesday 6th March: Angie Bell MP

Angie Bell MP is the Federal Member for Moncrief, which includes the Surfers Paradise Region. She is the Shadow Minister for Youth as well as the Shadow Minister for Early Childhood Education.

This will be the third annual occastion when we have our hyperactive federal member as our guest. To our members, Angie is known to be an eloquent speaker, but she best known for her very active support of our projects, including her strong support, the "facilitating" of us obtaining government grants for our Wheelchair Trust projects.

“Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Month?”

WASH RAG logo“AW, GIVE ME A BREAK! It’s been going since time immemorial! Why can’t it simply be fixed?!?”

If it only was that simple. Next time you turn on the tap to fill your kettle, spare a thought for your great-grandmother: Like mine, quite likely she would have collected water from the outside pump, the water tank or the local fountain. Ultimately, running water was installed in houses. It was a major “modern convenience". Clean water and all that goes with it is a condition for a healthy society because sanitation and hygiene are neigh impossible without clean water. (PLEASE, Henrietta, don’t get me started on wet wipes!). A healthy population is a condition for a prosperous society.

I’m very much playing in my fourth quarter (but I’m still getting the occasional uncontested kick, or at least catch and pass the ball ☺)  and have been a Rotarian for some 37 years. The theme of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (Rotary’s monthly theme for March) has had numerous other iterations. Australian Rotary projects go back to the early 1960s, undertaking clean water projects in PNG, India, Thailand and Borneo.

In our District 9640, many clubs are active in this area. Just a couple of examples: in PDG Darrell Brown's newsletter (2017-18) I recall reporting on projects of the Rotary Club of Burleigh Heads (at Kimbe, PNG), and the combined clubs of Lismore, Stanthorpe, Palm Beach and Glen Innes (at a school in Fiji). Did it make a difference? You bet!

On the international scene, Surfers Sunrise has always been more active in providing mobility for disabled people through our wheelchair project. Occasional 'major 5 year projects' were the buildings, such as the recently completed X-Ray Unit for Pentecost Island, Vanuatu, or the ‘House of Hope’ in Apia, Samoa, (see last week’s bulletin).  At present, there are no such projects on our horizon. So, could we consider a ‘Water, Sanitation and Hygiene’ project?

BTW, there is a dedicated international Rotary Action Group on this. Click on the image above.

Visit by Rotary team from Pennsylvania next week
On Wednesday 13th March 2024, our club will host the Rotary Friendship Exchange Team from Pennsylvania. We will be joined by members of the Rotary Club of Mermaid Beach, who are joint hosts of our visitors. (The team actually arrives on the Gold Coast on Monday 11th March, and will leave on Friday morning). There is plenty of opportunity to meet and greet our visitors - see Paul Seymour for more details.

Here is an opportunity to meet some interesting people!  Join us at the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club, from 07:00 am. The "formal" part of the meeting starts at the usual time, 07:30 am and concludes at 08:30.  The team will then proceed to our wheelchair shed (approx 1 hour), then drive up to Mt Tamborine. Depending on the weather, we'll visit to the National Park and/or the Tamborine Mountain Regional Botanic Gardens. All members and friends are welcome to join.

There are various other events relating to the RFE team - please refer to the Events Section for more details. Some events are restricted; please see Paul Seymour to book.
