President Doug is attending a funeral up north in Yepoon and he has asked me to write a few lines on his behalf. This could be quite risky, Doug. I might frighten the horses… 😊\
This coming Wednesday, we have a board meeting. It will be held at our usual venue at the Surfers SLSC. If you are a member, but not on the board, you are still welcome to attend as an observer (but you can’t vote or put motions). Well, why not attend? Become involved!
At that meeting, I’ll present the results of our Membership Satisfaction Survey. So far, I’ve had a total of 16 replies. To the question of ‘Overall how satisfied are you with being a member of the club?’ one reply is ‘Not at all satisfied’. OK, when I told you last week that I had 16 replies, I told you a fib: I forgot that five of those are test entries. That makes the total of just 11 real replies, out of 34 members to whom the request was emailed. Yes, I’m a bit disappointed. As the hoary old chestnut saying goes: “What is the difference between ignorance and apathy?” a) I don’t know, and b) I don’t care.
The survey is still open. Only members can respond, so I can’t publish the link. As it is anonymous, I don’t know who didn’t reply. If you lost the original email, let me know and I’ll send you another copy.
This coming Wednesday we'll have a board meeting, held at our usual venue, the Surfers Paradise SLSC. All members are welcome to attend, regardless of whether you are on the board. If you have a particular item or idea you would like to bring to the board's attention, now is the time! Contact President Doug Lipp or Secretary Trent Belling.
Sergeant Cherie McLean is the Youth Club Program Manager of the PCYC. She runs a multitude of programs, including programs to assist youth, particularly disadvantaged youth. Other programs include RUBY (Rise Up Yourself), a free strength training program for women who experience Domestic Violence.
But this visit was dedicated to a new program on offer: ‘Boxing After Dark’. This is a FREE boxing program for young people aged 12-18 years and is delivered every Thursday from 7pm-8pm. The program is delivered by Cherie personally at the Monaco Street campus, but will shortly also be available at Ashmore and Nerang.
Boxing? “There won’t be any fights in the ring, there won’t be any sparring”, Cherie clarified. The program is primarily designed to give young persons an opportunity to learn a sport, whilst they get an opportunity to channel their emotions towards a punching bag. This is a ‘back to basics’ early intervention youth program. The aim is for them to be physically active, socially connecting with the Police (and with each other) in a friendly and positive environment. And we provide some food… “Food is a powerful magnet for young people” Cherie assured us.
The PCYC runs various other programs designed towards Youth. Please download a copy of Cherie’s PowerPoint slides (see Download Section on the right), which also include contact details.

Please meet our newest member of Surfers Sunrise: Dr Elizabeth Celi.
Elizabeth works as a psychologist, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) trauma clinician and author, with a focus on complex PTSD. She is an experienced Rotarian and is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Mt Martha, (Melbourne, VIC). In our club, she has requested to be assigned to the Rotary Foundation committee.
This should have been in last week's bulletin, but I ran out of space...
Congratulations, Simon Brook: Inducted to our great club almost exactly 10 years ago. Then our youngest member (since then he lost that position to Ashleigh Symes ☺). Simon's initial involvement with Rotary was as a Group Study Exchange member to Wisonsin, USA, and he was our club's President in 2016/17.
Photo shows Simon with Darrell Brown, who nominated him.
Duty Roster - note: subject to change - please check every week. Note: Fellowship duty also is expected to be at the Project Shed on the Saturday following the meeting
